Policy Brief: Automated Vehicles for Safer, Smarter, and Sustainable Mobility – Overcoming Harsh Weather Challenges.

We are excited to announce the publication of the ROADVIEW policy brief, a key outcome of the ROADVIEW project, developed in collaboration with all project partners. This document highlights the critical policy challenges for deploying Connected and Automated Vehicles (CAVs) capable of operating reliably in harsh weather conditions. CAVs have the potential to transform mobility by enhancing road safety, improving traffic efficiency, and reducing emissions. However, regulatory challenges and fragmented policies across EU Member States pose significant barriers to their adoption. Our policy brief outlines key recommendations, including:

  • Establishing a harmonised European framework for CAV testing and approval
  • Defining clear liability regulations for CAV operations
  • Ensuring AI transparency and compliance with the EU AI Act
  • Balancing data privacy and security under GDPR
  • Defining an EU-wide hybrid methodology for CAV testing and approval
  • Strengthening V2X communication standards for adverse weather conditions

By addressing these challenges, Europe can accelerate the adoption of weather-resilient automated mobility solutions and grow as a leader in smart and sustainable transport.
